Construction

Winthrop University Eagles take off

One student's thoughts on Winthrop's construction projects are "all over the place."

As construction work continues, the Anthony J. and Gale N. DiGiorgio Campus Center is expected to open mid 2010. Construction for the $21 million project began in Spring 2008. The 128,229 ft. building will include things such as a food court, post office, class rooms, lounges, meeting rooms and movie theater.

"I have heard there will be a Popeye's at the new student center. I would much rather have seen a Chic-fil-a instead," Sophomore IMC major Tyler English said. English also said they should have asked students what they wanted to see inside the student center.

Along with recent completed projects such as Scholar's Walk, Carroll Hall and the renovation of Tillman there is a proposal for a new library, renovation to Phelps Hall and hopeful music library addition to Music Conservatory Hall.

"Dacus Library is very outdated and Winthrop needs to upgrade to newer facilities in order to continue to attract new student," English said. Winthrop University's proposed plans says the Library will include both traditional contemporary collections and historic archives, as well as coordinating access to a global array of up-to-the-minute on-line information resources. English said he hopes that it is here in time for him to see.

Casting call for all broadcasting majors

Growing up Kristen Elmore dreamed of acting in front of the camera, now she dreams to be behind it.

One obstacle that most high school or college students come to is deciding on a career choice.

Kristen Elmore, a sophomore broadcasting major, grew up wanting to be an actress going from one casting call to another. Originally from a small old area of Columbia, SC she had high hopes to become famous. "My mom would roll my hair in big hot rollers, use half a can of hairspray and put me in a dress," Elmore said.

In high school Elmore was editor-in-chief of the Cardinal Newman newspaper which influenced her to decide on print journalism as her major. After realizing the lack of pay writers make working for newspapers she changed to broadcasting. She feels she has made an accomplishment as a member of the Video Production Club.

Now as a student in the Mass Communications department she plans to get her degree in broadcasting and become a television and film producer. Elmore said she figured news broadcasting would be more respected than acting. Elmore says even with a new career path, she will still live in L.A. one day.
